5/5/2016, WMTV Madison (video) –  A new report released Thursday shows Madison area roads are in worse shape than you may think.

The data released by TRIP, a national transportation research group, shows Madison being one of the hardest hit areas when it comes to bad roads. According to the report, 68% of all roads in the Madison area are in either poor or mediocre condition. The roads are costing drivers about $1,000 a year. Those costs come in tire wear, and constant maintenance on cars. Researchers say the conditions show something needs to change.

“The condition of the state roads are not at all a reflection of the abilities or the capabilities of the state DOT, or the local municipality. But there simply is not enough transportation funding at the local, state, or federal level to keep the transportation system in good repair and keep it operating efficiently and safely,” Carolyn Kelly, the Associate Director of Research and Communications for Trip.

Kelly says it’s up to residents and law makers to push for more money towards Wisconsin roads.
